In the run up to the Gaugemaster Model Railway Open Weekend, 3rd and 4th September 2016, RIGHT LINES we will be looking at a few of the many superb model railway layouts being exhibited over the weekend.

This issue we are continuing with Kayreuth - an N Scale German layout built by Ian Hogben.

Measuring 23ft by 10ft, Kayreuth is one of the biggest layouts on display over the weekend, depicting a scene from Modern Germany, set around the turn of the century.

Kayreuth is a fictional town in Nordrhein-Westfalen in western Germany. The town sits astride the River Lippe/Wesel-Datteln, and provides workers for the larger, more heavily industrialised towns nearby – although there is some light industry present in Kayreuth.

The layout focuses on a four-track mainline, but there are also three branch lines that head off from the northern end of the Kayreuth Hbf. (Hauptbahnhof), which has nine platforms.

Kayreuth usually sees a variety of traffic pass through including ICE1, ICE2 and international expresses, InterRegio and local passenger services, and a high volume of freight.

In the timeframe of the layout, however, the circumstances have changed. The mainline is closed due to bridge replacement works which have also closed one of the branch lines. You can see these works just to the north of the Main Station and A37 Autobahn, which also has works on it.

This means that some of the trains that would usually the mainline to Dusseldorf, Koln, Duisberg and Essen have been diverted via other routes. Anything else that is calling at or passing through Kayreuth has been routed down one of the branch lines and out over the three span girder bridge across the River Lippe.

If you would like a sneak-peek of the layout running before the show, there are plenty of very good videos on YouTube - search for 'Kayreuth' and get watching!

Kayreuth is being exhibited at the Gaugemaster Model Railway Open Weekend on 3rd and 4th September 2016, one of nearly 20 layouts on show in many different scales, depicting railways from around the world. Entry is free, with free parking.
